Eventhough times have been exceptional and believe me, I have thought hard on many things regarding breeding, I still feel that life and plans will go on.
I do worry whether each and everyone wanting a puppy has really thought everything through. A puppy is not just a fun time and it will not stay as a puppy all its life. A puppy will grow into an adult dog and it will need care and attention for many, many years to come. It should never be a quick idea to get a puppy. And it should not be like buying a t-shirt. There shouldn’t be a variety to choose from. For me, that would be red flags in a big way. I wouldn’t buy a dog if there was multiple litters to choose from. That is sadly the case in too many nowadays. With that said, I understand if a breeder has two litter at the same time, I’ve had them. Bitches don’t always play nice you know. But that is not a norm, it is an exception. A breeder, who carefully thinks his/her combinations, spends years in studying pedigrees and dogs in them to make their selection, is truly a treasure. There is always a reason why, if you ask. And it should not be one sentence. At least for me, if you make a decision to breed, you should have good and thorough explanation why you are making that combination. What does it give you and why you chose these dogs. How do they complement each others and how do they reflect to the standard.
And when choosing a breeder and a puppy, always remember that it is not gold all that glitters. Take the time and talk to a number of breeders, look online as we have this amazing breeding database in Finland, you’ll see at least a part of what the breeder is doing. Remember though, not all is there to see. Try to find out as much as you can. People can fool you but facts don’t.
And last but not least. The breeder is your best backup and will support you and your dog its whole life. In best cases, it will be a friendship rather than just breeder-owner relationship.
With these deep thoughts I happily let you know that we do have plans for puppies this year! Our dear Caitlyn is hopefully the first mom-to-be. See more on our PUPPIES page.
